What's The Difference Between A Synthetic Wig And A Human Hair Wig?
Quality synthetic wigs start from around $200 and will give you a wig that will look like 'real hair'. Synthetic wigs are very easy to look after and on manufacture have been pre-set so the style and/or curls etc will be there after washing if the proper washing instructions are followed. These are highly recommended for women who want a wig for a short period of time or for those who are undergoing chemotherapy. These wigs are also good for fashion etc.
A good quality human hair wig is expensive starting from well over $1,000. Human hair wigs are good for those wanting a wig long term. Unlike synthetic wigs, human hair wigs have to be continually set and styled. Human hair wigs are high maintenance and for this reason are not recommended for chemotherapy patients.
What's The Difference Between A Normal Lace Wig And A Monofilament Wig?
A monofilament wig has a very fine mesh material (monofilament) in the top of the wig that takes on the colour of the wig wearer's scalp, thus giving the illusion that the hair is growing from the person's head. Monofilament wigs are a little dearer than the normal lace wig as each individual strand of fibre is hand-tied into the monofilament material resulting in a more natural looking wig. Some ladies who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy feel the monofilament wigs are more comfortable to wear and some monofilament wigs give a more flatter look if that is what you are used to.
Are There Different Size Wigs For Different Size Heads?
All wigs come with adjustable tabs that can make the wig tighter or looser. For those with smaller (petite) heads we carry a range of petite wigs. If you have a petite head then have a look at wigs such as Tia, Nina, Josie, Angie, Krista, Pamela and also have a look in the monofilament section at the children's wigs - these are also for adults.
Do I Need To Buy The Wig Care Products To Look After My Wig?
Put it this way - don't buy the wig if you're not going to buy the wig care products. The wig products are important to keep your wig looking good and give it longevity. You will need a wig shampoo, conditioner, wig brush and wig drying/storing rack to maintain your wig. Do not use normal hair shampoos etc on your wig as some of these contain ingredients such as oil, alcohol and other products that can damage or coat the wig fibres which will cause your wig will take on a shaggy dog look in no time thus shortening your wig's life.
How Do I Care For A Synthetic Wig?
Quality synthetic wigs are easy to care for. The superior fibre processing of the Wigs On Wheels wigs allows our products to "bounce" back to their original style if maintained correctly. Follow the simple instructions below to keep your wig looking great:
Gently brush the wig thoroughly.
Add a dash of wig shampoo and wash gently in cold or lukewarm water.
Rinse thoroughly in cold water to remove all shampoo.
Lay the wig on a towel and pat it dry with the towel then place it on the wig rack. Lay longer styles on a flat surface when drying so the wet fibre does not pull out the curl pattern. Do NOT brush while wet, as it may permanently brush out any curl in the fibre.
After the wig is completely dry spray the wig with revitalising mist and brush gently into the wig (the mist conditions the fibre making it more manageable and brings back the sheen). The wig can now be brushed and/or fingered into the desired style. Always brush from the bottom up.
Please spray the wig with revitalising mist in between washes to condition and give sheen to the wig.
Please note these important points:
Do NOT use curling irons, hot rollers, blow dryers or other hot styling instruments as they may damage the fibre.
Wash the wig regularly.
When not wearing the wig, make sure it is stored properly. Shorter wigs should be placed on a wig rack, longer styles should be laid flat. Do NOT fold the wig when storing.
Be careful wearing a wig around areas of extreme heat such as near an oven, dishwasher, fireplace or BBQ. While the fibre used in the Wigs On Wheels wigs is not flammable and does not pose a threat, extreme heat can damage the fibre causing it to frizz or brittle. Extra caution should be taken when opening an oven or dishwasher door as the heat may damage the fibre.
I've Lost My Hair Due To Chemotherapy And Now My Wig Is Baggy In The Crown Area
Not a problem. If there is only a little bagginess then you would probably just ignore this unless it bothers you. If this bagginess should become an issue then you can easily resize the wig. Turn the wig inside out and working from the centre out, gather 1-3 lacings (rows of fibre) (depending how baggy it is) and hand sew these together where they meet at the vertical webbings - you only need to sew on 3 to 5 of the vertical webbings (say the centre one and may be 2 either side). Use big stitches and a coloured thread that doesn't blend in so that when your hair starts to return you can let the wig out again.
I'm Loosing My hair Due to Chemotherapy, Do I Need to Get A Wig?
No, you don't. But there are pros and cons and we'll list them.
A minority of women will not wear a wig during their treatment and are extremely comfortable about this.
Having spoken to women that have been unfortunate enough to have gone through chemotherapy treatment twice in their lives who bought a wig for the second treatment having gone without during the first - they have said that wearing a wig made them feel more positive and better about themselves - like donning an outfit that you know you look good in you adopt a positive persona. They also said that they could blend into the crowd rather than feel self-conscious wherever they went. Sometimes a friend or family member has trouble coping with the cancer journey and wearing a wig stops it being a constant reminder to them. So the choice is yours but do what you feel most happy and comfortable about.
For those about to commence chemotherapy, we suggest you organise a wig beforehand. That way we can match your hairstyle and colour and order the wig in if we need to.
What Wigs Should I Be Looking At To Suit My Face Shape?
Generally, the idea is to create an oval looking face regardless of your head shape.
Oval shaped faces can generally wear any style wig as they have the optimum face shape.
Round shaped faces often suit a shag or mid-length styles with hair kept close to the face to give an illusion of more height in the crown.
Square shaped faces are usually suited to soft wavy hair falling down from the temples and side of face with some height in the crown.
Rectangular shaped faces require a bit of width and volume to soften face.
I Want A Wig That Matches My Current Hair Style
That's not a problem. Firstly, our wigs are very versatile, and many different looks can be obtained from just one wig. Often (though not always) the part can be changed if there is one or it can be eliminated if need be. The wigs can usually fluffed up for volume or combed in for a sleeker look. If you can't find exactly what you are looking for then choose a wig similar to the style you are after and use it as your base wherein it can then be altered to suit your current hair style.
I Want A Wig That Is Similar To My Normal Hair Colouring
Most of our wigs come in approximately 25 colours so we can generally match your hair colour. Most of our wigs are also available in streaks as well.
If The Wig Is For Medical Purposes, Can I Get A Rebate?
Depending on the type of health fund cover you have, you may be entitled to a rebate. Please ring your health fund to find out what rebate, if any, you are entitled to.
If you are a Department of Veteran Affairs gold cardholder then you are entitled to a rebate of $200-$300 on a synthetic wig. Generally white cardholders are not eligible for a rebate but can, in certain circumstances. If you are a white cardholder please contact the Department to find out your eligibility.
Both health fund and Department of Veteran Affairs cardholders will need to obtain a letter from their doctor stating the wig is for medical purposes.
Please notify your Wigs On Wheels lady if you are a Department of Veteran Affairs cardholder at time of appointment (you will need your letter from your doctor prior to your wig appointment).

Some of our customers choose to hold morning teas or lunches with friends for support etc in conjunction with their wig appointment. It's your call - you have total control over your appointment.
This Goes With That - A lot of women like to be able to try a wig on and see what it looks like with eg a certain hat, scarf or outfit or with their favourite lipstick etc. At home you can do this. Also, a wig's true colours will show more in the daylight - at home you have the ability to step outside or perhaps to a sun lit room so you can see the true colour of the wig.
